Naturopathic medicine is a personalized, complete and co-ordinated system of healthcare which combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of treatment. By using natural therapies and gentle techniques, the goal of naturopathic medicine is to empower an individual to achieve their highest level of health. The role of the naturopathic physician is to assess the patient as a whole, to find the root cause of an illness, and to educate an individual on aspects of disease prevention and health enhancement.

Naturopathic doctors are specialists in natural medicine and preventative health care, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional healing wisdom. We receive at least seven years of post-secondary education and are trained to identify the underlying cause(s) of disease and to assist the body in healing itself using natural methods. Our education includes, but is not limited to: training in basic medical sciences, differential diagnosis of disease, physical and clinical diagnosis and naturopathic principles and therapeutics. After graduating from an accredited naturopathic college, we are required to take and successfully complete international licensing examinations before registration is granted to practise as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND).

Your first visit will be approximately one hour long and will include a thorough examination of your medical history and present health concerns. A physical examination and any pertinent testing that can be done in the clinic will also be performed. After the initial visit, you will be sent home with homework, including a one-week diet diary to complete. The first visit is generally an information gathering session. A second visit is usually scheduled one week after the initial visit to examine the diet diary and to discuss the complete treatment program. This allows the doctor to thoroughly assess the case and to give it the special attention that it requires, in order to allow for a more accurate and personalized prescription. Follow-up visits are booked as necessary in order to assess your progress and to make changes as needed.

No, naturopathic medicine is not covered under OHIP, however, many extended healthcare insurance plans offer partial or full coverage for naturopathic visits.
